First Lady Receives African Wrestling Championship Team

Nigeria’s victorious wrestling contingent from the 2026 African Wrestling Championships in Egypt has been presented to the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, at the Power of 1 held at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The team, which secured a historic 15th African women’s wrestling title alongside strong podium finishes in the men’s category, was led by the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation and Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.

The athletes were earlier received at the National Sports Commission before being formally presented at the national event, which celebrated the achievements and contributions of Nigerian women and youths across various sectors.

The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, praised the team’s performance, describing it as a reflection of Nigeria’s growing dominance in African wrestling.

“This achievement once again shows the strength, resilience and dominance of Nigerian wrestling on the African stage,” Dikko said.
“Winning a record 15th women’s title alongside podium finishes in the men’s events is a strong statement by Team Nigeria.”

He commended the athletes, coaches and the Nigeria Wrestling Federation for consistently elevating the country’s image and inspiring the next generation of sports talents.

Dikko also lauded the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her support for Nigerian women and young athletes.

“Indeed, we sincerely applaud the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Mother of the Nation, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, for appreciating and motivating the girls and always standing for Nigerian women,” he said.
