Mrs Oghogho Musa, President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), has urged wives of military and police personnel to remain active and avoid stress in order to stay healthy.

Musa made the call during the DEPOWA monthly health aerobics session titled “Dance to De-Stress” on Saturday in Abuja.

She said the women should continue engaging in physical activities that would help them remain active and protect them from stress and related illnesses.

“That is why we are dancing to de-stress. If you cannot run or walk, you can dance to keep active.

“So, I want to encourage every one of you to keep this in mind. You can play music at home to stay active.

“When you dance, you are actually sweating and having fun, keeping fit, and at the same time burning off unnecessary fat, staying healthy and active.

“Please, let us keep dancing and stay active. You can never overemphasise the importance of being active it will do you and your body a lot of good.

“And remember, when you do this, you are investing in your future. May the Lord keep you strong and healthy to remain active,” she said.

The DEPOWA President said the exercise was especially necessary for military wives who often shoulder the responsibility of maintaining the home in their husbands’ absence.

Dr Juliet Ango, Consultant Public Health Physician and Chairperson of DEPOWA’s Health and Sports Committee, said stress was a serious issue that people often underestimated or overlooked.

Ango noted that stress had a direct impact on both mental and physical health, and could lead to hypertension and several other related conditions.

She urged the women to be deliberate in their efforts to de-stress by taking time to unwind and participating in exercise or sporting activities.
