Benue Confirms Lassa Fever Outbreak, Records Four Deaths

The Benue State Government in North Central Nigeria has confirmed an outbreak of Lassa fever, with 58 cases recorded so far, including infections among healthcare workers.

The Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Paul Ejeh Ogwuche, disclosed this in an interview with Voice of Nigeria, expressing concern over the continued consumption of rodents, which he described as a high-risk practice contributing to the spread of the disease. He urged residents to avoid the delicacy in order to minimise further health risks.

According to official data from the ministry, four people have died from the disease, while four healthcare workers contracted the virus while treating affected patients.

Dr Ogwuche stated that the Ministry of Health and Human Services remains committed to protecting lives, strengthening disease surveillance systems and improving healthcare delivery across the state. He added that, despite the Lassa fever outbreak, no cases of dengue fever have been reported.

The Commissioner said the ministry has intensified public awareness campaigns to curb further transmission. Engagements have been held with media organisations, traditional rulers and religious leaders to educate communities about prevention and control measures.

He also confirmed ongoing collaboration with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and international partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF, to provide technical and logistical support.

An Emergency Response Team has been activated at the state level, with healthcare workers trained and equipped to manage cases effectively.

Addressing the ongoing strike by medical professionals at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Dr Ogwuche acknowledged its impact on healthcare services but assured residents that the government is working towards a resolution to ensure the continuity of essential medical services.

“This administration remains committed to enhancing healthcare services, with significant investments in infrastructure, equipment, and healthcare personnel,” he said.
