Atletico Madrid Defeat Tottenham 5–2 in Champions League

Atletico Madrid delivered an emphatic performance on Tuesday, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 5–2 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 encounter.

The Spanish side produced a dominant first-half display at the Metropolitano Stadium, taking advantage of several defensive mistakes by the visitors to secure a commanding lead ahead of the return leg in London.

Tottenham’s 22-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, making only his third appearance of the season and first since October, endured a difficult start. Two costly errors from the Czech shot-stopper allowed Atletico to surge ahead before he was substituted in the 17th minute by manager Igor Tudor.

Marcos Llorente opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Kinsky slipped while attempting to play the ball from the back. Eight minutes later, Antoine Griezmann doubled Atletico’s advantage when Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven also slipped while trying to control a pass.

Moments later, Julian Alvarez capitalised on another mistake from Kinsky to score Atletico’s third goal in the 15th minute, marking the earliest a team has scored three goals in a Champions League knockout match.

Following Kinsky’s substitution, replacement goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario conceded again when Robin Le Normand headed in Atletico’s fourth goal after parrying a free kick from Griezmann. Goal-line technology confirmed the ball had crossed the line.

Tottenham managed to pull one back in the 26th minute through defender Pedro Porro, who collected a pass from Richarlison before firing past Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Spurs captain Cristian Romero nearly added another before halftime but saw his header strike the post, while Griezmann missed a clear chance at the other end.

Atletico effectively sealed the contest 10 minutes into the second half with a swift counterattack. Alvarez sprinted from inside his own half before sliding the ball past Vicario for his second goal of the night and Atletico’s fifth.

Tottenham reduced the deficit in the 76th minute when substitute Dominic Solanke capitalised on an error by Oblak while the goalkeeper attempted to play out from the back.

Despite the victory, Alvarez cautioned that the tie was not yet decided.

“We are happy with the win and the three-goal lead, but there are still 90 minutes left,” he said.

He added that Atletico remained focused on maintaining their momentum and securing a place in the quarter-finals when the teams meet again in London next week.
