Uber Technologies, an American multinational transportation company, has ended its operations in Nigeria, bringing its 12-year presence to a close.
The company announced that it would wind down its Nigerian business on September 2 following a review of its operations, but did not provide further details about the decision.
Uber entered the Nigerian market with its Lagos launch in 2014 before expanding to other cities as demand for app-based transport increased.
The company’s exit comes amid growing competition in Nigeria’s ride-hailing industry, where operators have faced rising fuel costs, inflation and currency volatility. These challenges have increased operating expenses and placed pressure on both drivers and platforms.
In a notice to customers, Uber said its help centre would remain available until September 23 to assist users with outstanding account-related issues.
The company did not disclose how many drivers or passengers would be affected by the withdrawal or whether it planned to sell any assets in the country.
An Uber spokesperson also confirmed that the company had stopped operations in Uganda, where users attempting to book rides on Thursday were unable to find available services.
