Adilet, a newly established pro-government party in Kazakhstan, has won more than 71% of the vote in the country’s parliamentary election, according to the electoral commission.
The result, announced on Monday, is expected to strengthen President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s political influence in the Central Asian country.
Adilet was formed earlier this year by senior allies of Tokayev and subsequently absorbed Amanat, the country’s previous ruling party.
The electoral commission said four other political groups also secured seats in parliament. They include the pro-business Respublika and Ak Zhol parties, the centre-left Nationwide Social Democratic Party and the Auyl party, which represents rural voters.
Although regarded as opposition groups, the four parties are generally seen as supportive of Tokayev’s government.
The election is therefore expected to reinforce the president’s position and give his administration stronger political control in parliament
