The Nigerian Government has announced plans to evacuate another 83 Nigerians from South Africa amid concerns over rising anti-foreigner sentiment and attacks in the country.
The returnees are expected to arrive at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos on Wednesday, August 19, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ministry said they would leave Johannesburg’s Oliver Tambo International Airport at 3:35 p.m. local time aboard South African Airways and are expected to land in Lagos at about 8:45 p.m.

The evacuation comes after the Federal Government concluded a voluntary repatriation programme that brought nearly 1,490 Nigerians back from South Africa amid concerns over Afrophobic attacks and anti-foreigner sentiments.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the government remained committed to protecting the safety and dignity of Nigerians living abroad.
It also called for wider support from private organisations, state governments and other stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s response to consular emergencies and protect its citizens overseas.
