Nigeria, UK Deepen Defence Cooperation Against Terrorism

The defence partnership between Nigeria and the United Kingdom has gained renewed momentum following a high-level strategic engagement between Operation HADIN KAI and a British military delegation in Maiduguri, underscoring both countries’ commitment to enhancing counterterrorism efforts, military professionalism and regional security.

The Headquarters of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, received the United Kingdom’s Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Military Strategy and Operations), Lieutenant General Charlie Collins, and his delegation during a strategic visit aimed at strengthening operational cooperation, military capacity building and professional development.

The visit reaffirmed the enduring defence relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom as both nations continue to collaborate in tackling terrorism and other security threats confronting the North East.

Beyond immediate security cooperation, the engagement reflected an increasing emphasis on institutional capacity building, with greater focus on advanced training, knowledge transfer and the development of professional military capabilities essential for addressing evolving security challenges.

During the visit, Lieutenant General Collins reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to sustaining its defence partnership with Nigeria, stressing the importance of maintaining close collaboration in promoting regional stability and enhancing military effectiveness.

The discussions also highlighted the critical role of international defence partnerships in improving operational preparedness, strengthening institutional resilience and enhancing the capacity of security forces to respond effectively to complex and emerging threats.

Military leadership of Operation HADIN KAI described strategic partnerships, joint training initiatives and professional military education as key drivers in consolidating operational successes and supporting long-term peace and stability across the North East.

As part of the visit, the British delegation inspected the Quarter Guard and witnessed a practical field training exercise conducted by personnel under the British Military Advisory and Training Team (BMATT), demonstrating continued cooperation in strengthening operational capabilities.

The training exercise underscored ongoing efforts to raise professional standards, improve operational efficiency and build a more resilient and capable Nigerian military.

The engagement further reflects the growing significance of defence diplomacy within Nigeria’s security framework, where collaboration with international partners increasingly prioritises sustainable capacity development alongside ongoing security operations.

For Operation HADIN KAI, the strengthened partnership aligns with its broader mission of dismantling terrorist networks, protecting civilian populations and creating conditions conducive to lasting peace and stability in Nigeria’s North East.
