Senate to Hold Emergency Sitting Over Electoral Act

The Senate has announced plans to reconvene for an emergency plenary sitting on Tuesday, 10 February, at 12:00 noon, despite having earlier adjourned legislative activities until 24 February.

The decision was communicated through an official notice dated 8 February 2026, signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, acting on the directive of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

In the notice, senators were formally informed of the development.

“I am directed by His Excellency, the President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio,” the notice stated, “to inform all Distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria that an emergency sitting of the Senate has been scheduled to hold on Tuesday, 10 February, at noon.”

It added that the sitting would take place in the Senate Chamber and urged senators to attend, noting that “all inconveniences this will cause to Distinguished Senators are highly regretted.”

The announcement comes days after the Senate adjourned plenary last Thursday following the passage of the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026.

The earlier adjournment was intended to allow lawmakers to participate in ongoing budget defence sessions involving Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), ahead of the final consideration of the ₦58.472 trillion 2026 Appropriation Bill, scheduled for passage on 17 March.

Although the notice did not specify the reason for the emergency sitting, the timing has heightened speculation that it may be linked to the intense national debate over the Senate’s handling of key provisions in the Electoral Act amendment, particularly Section 60(3), which concerns the electronic transmission of election results.
