The Nigerian government has vowed to expedite the completion of all ongoing public housing projects in 2026, highlighting renewed attention on the flagship Renewed Hope Housing Programme championed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, during an expanded management meeting in Abuja, where senior officials assessed the ministry’s 2025 performance and unveiled its strategic plan for 2026.
Mr Dangiwa stressed that the federal government is committed to closing funding gaps and settling outstanding obligations in the housing sector in the 2026 fiscal year, describing housing delivery as a cornerstone of the administration’s social and economic agenda.
He said: “The administration of President Bola Tinubu has made firm commitments to address funding gaps and clear outstanding liabilities in the housing sector in 2026.”
Despite financial challenges in 2025, Mr Dangiwa pointed to “notable achievements,” including reforms in land management and steady progress on Renewed Hope Cities under development in Karsana, Abuja, as well as Kano and Lagos—key commercial and population hubs in Nigeria.
He further revealed that three additional housing projects in Maiduguri, Enugu, and Port Harcourt are slated for delivery, raising the total number of Renewed Hope housing developments nationwide to six. The projects, spanning northern, eastern, and southern Nigeria, reflect the government’s commitment to geographic inclusivity and national cohesion.
Emphasising efficiency and accountability, the minister instructed officials overseeing Public-Private Partnerships and Public Buildings to intensify on-site supervision and contractor oversight.
He added: “You need to engage these contractors closely by ensuring that those mobilised return to site and are properly monitored. Nigerians expect affordable and decent housing.”
The ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Shuaib Belgore, reiterated the administration’s expectations, urging departments to meet their 2026 targets and assuring full institutional support.
Dr Belgore also disclosed plans to increase public awareness of housing milestones as part of the government’s 2026 performance scorecard. He noted that Nigerians are “eager to see improved delivery of the Renewed Hope housing programme,” adding that the ministry’s successes would be showcased for maximum visibility.
