North Korea Fires Ballistic Missile Towards Eastern Waters

North Korea has launched a ballistic missile into the sea off its east coast, according to South Korean and Japanese officials.

South Korea’s military reported that the unidentified missile was fired from the country’s northwest region near the Chinese border, targeting waters to the east. The Japanese government confirmed the launch, stating that the projectile likely fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said there were no confirmed reports of damage from the incident.

The launch comes amid heightened diplomatic attention, following a recent visit by former U.S. President Donald Trump to South Korea. During his trip, Trump reiterated his willingness to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, raising speculation about a potential agreement, though no meeting ultimately took place. Trump also indicated he was prepared to return to the region for discussions with Kim.

North Korea has conducted multiple short-range ballistic missile tests in recent months, including what it described as a hypersonic missile and sea-to-surface cruise missiles, coinciding with visits by Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to South Korea for a regional summit.
