The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed a report by an online platform linking the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary to an alleged attempted military coup.
In a statement on Sunday, the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, described the publication as false, malicious, and aimed at creating unnecessary tension among Nigerians.
He explained that the decision to cancel the Independence Day parade was purely strategic, taken to allow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to attend an important bilateral meeting outside the country.
“The decision was aimed at sustaining the ongoing momentum in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry,” the statement noted.
Brigadier General Gusau also dismissed claims that the cancellation was connected to an investigation involving 16 military officers. He clarified that the probe was a routine internal disciplinary measure intended to promote professionalism and accountability within the Armed Forces.
“The investigative panel has been duly constituted and its findings will be made public in due course,” he added.
The DHQ urged Nigerians to disregard the false publication and continue to support the military and other security agencies in their efforts to protect the nation.
It reaffirmed the Armed Forces’ commitment to the unity, stability, and progress of Nigeria under the democratic leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
