NASU, SSANU Issue Seven-Day Strike Notice

The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have given the Federal Government a seven-day ultimatum to resolve pending labour disputes or face industrial action.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Dingyadi, and made available to journalists on Monday in Abuja, the unions warned that the ultimatum would take effect from 15 September 2025.

The letter, signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peter Adeyemi, and SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, outlined several unresolved issues. These include the disbursement of ₦50 billion earned allowances, payment of withheld salaries, settlement of arrears from the 25/35 per cent salary increment, and the long-delayed renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement.

The unions alleged that their members in universities were unfairly shortchanged, while staff in inter-university centres were completely excluded from the ₦50 billion allowances disbursement.

On the issue of salaries, they demanded the immediate release of arrears and the full implementation of the 25/35 per cent increment, accusing government of reneging on repeated assurances.

“Despite assurances, nothing concrete has been done to pay our members,” the unions stated.

They further accused the government of sidelining non-teaching staff unions in the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, describing the delay as both unfair and unacceptable.

“In light of persistent neglect, we hereby serve a seven-day notice effective 15 September 2025. Failure to act will trigger industrial actions, including strikes,” the statement added.
