South Korea’s Foreign Minister to Visit China This Week

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun will visit China from 17 to 18 September, the foreign ministry announced on Monday.

During the visit, Cho is scheduled to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday to discuss a range of issues, including preparations for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s planned visit to South Korea next month.

Seoul has extended invitations to both President Xi and U.S. President Donald Trump to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, scheduled for 31 October in Gyeongju.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has also suggested that President Trump use the opportunity to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during his regional trip.

Earlier this month, President Xi stood alongside Kim at a military parade in Beijing and held their first bilateral meeting in six years.

Seoul has repeatedly urged Beijing to play a constructive role in encouraging Pyongyang to resume dialogue over its nuclear programme.
