Amazon Plans $10bn Investment in OpenAI

OpenAI is set to produce its first artificial intelligence chip next year in partnership with U.S. semiconductor giant Broadcom , the Financial Times reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The ChatGPT maker plans to use the chip internally rather than sell it to external customers, the report said, citing one person close to the project.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report, and OpenAI and Broadcom did not respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.

OpenAI, which helped popularise generative AI capable of producing human-like responses, relies on massive computing power to train and operate its systems.

Last year, Reuters reported that OpenAI was working with Broadcom and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing to design its first in-house chip, while also using processors from AMD and Nvidia to meet soaring infrastructure demands.

In February, Reuters reported that OpenAI was finalising the design of its first in-house chip and planned to send it for fabrication at TSMC in the coming months, as part of efforts to reduce reliance on Nvidia.

Broadcom CEO Hock Tan said on Thursday the company expects artificial intelligence revenue growth in fiscal 2026 to “improve significantly” after securing more than $10 billion in AI infrastructure orders from a new customer, without naming it.

The move would put OpenAI in line with peers Google , Amazon and Meta, which have all developed custom chips to handle the surging demand for AI workloads.
