The Adamawa Health Supply Management Agency has made significant strides in controlling the distribution of substandard drugs within the state.

In an interview on Sunday in Yola, the agency’s Executive Secretary, Mr. Dauda Deri, highlighted that the agency had ensured a steady supply of quality medicines to healthcare facilities across the state.

Deri explained that the establishment of the agency had allowed the state to directly procure medicines from certified pharmaceutical manufacturers across the country, greatly reducing the influx of counterfeit and substandard drugs.

“This approach has significantly limited the entry of substandard drugs into our healthcare system,” he said, adding that the agency would continue to monitor the drug supply chain to protect public health in the state.

The purchase arrangement, which eliminates middlemen, guarantees that drugs are of high quality, affordable, and safe for use. “Thanks to the Federal Government’s support, states with legally established drug management agencies can now source medicines directly from manufacturers. Each batch is traceable, making it easier to address any issues that arise. This is a major step forward in eliminating substandard drugs,” Deri explained.

He also emphasized that the centralised drug procurement system, backed by robust data, had improved the efficiency of supply deliveries to health facilities. This system has not only reduced costs but has also made medicines more affordable for the public.

Deri credited the agency’s success to the unwavering support of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, who made healthcare a priority. He pointed out that Adamawa’s swift establishment of the agency was recognized nationwide as the fastest healthcare transformation of its kind in Nigeria.

Reforms implemented by the agency, such as providing essential tools for healthcare professionals, have revitalized the pharmacy profession in the state. These efforts have led to an influx of pharmacists into the state civil service, reversing a long-standing trend of healthcare professionals leaving the state.

“For the first time since the state’s creation, we are seeing a significant return of pharmacists to the state. With the development of new hospitals, upgraded facilities, and a reliable supply of quality medications, the agency is setting a new standard for healthcare delivery in the region,” Deri added.
