The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has urged African women to remain committed to leadership and service, stressing the importance of courage, conviction, and impact.

She gave the charge during a meeting with women from Nigeria’s Niger Delta, led by Dr. Timiebi Koripamo-Agary, on the sidelines of the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women in New York.

Dr. Koripamo-Agary said the visit was to recognise Mohammed’s global impact and inspire younger women.

“We thought it important to come and acknowledge the impact you are making on behalf of women globally and to expose these younger women, who are my mentees, to what is possible,” she said.

Also speaking, NDDC Director of Women and Culture, Mrs. Ahunna Imoni, highlighted the challenges facing women in the region.

“Women in the Niger Delta suffer the hardest impacts of crises floods, poverty, and displacement… we came here to learn from global best practices and strengthen our network through partnerships,” she said.

Responding, Mohammed emphasised the need for organisation and collaboration.

“You have to stop agonising and start organising… The way you structure your programmes matters,” she said.

She added: “Everything you do, deliver for human beings… Your voice matters, and the courage of your conviction matters.”
