President Tinubu Names Tunji Disu as Acting IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has named Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as the Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect, citing the urgent need to address ongoing security challenges across the country. The appointment follows established legal procedures and the provisions of the Police Act.

The President, through his spokesperson Mr. Bayo Onanuga, expressed confidence that AIG Disu’s extensive operational experience and proven leadership would provide the Nigeria Police Force with steady guidance during this critical period.

Mr. Onanuga also confirmed that, in line with the Police Act, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council to formally consider AIG Disu for confirmation as substantive Inspector-General. Following this, the nomination will be submitted to the Senate for final approval.

President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s dedication to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force remains professional, accountable, and fully capable of fulfilling its constitutional duties.

The announcement also included the acceptance of the resignation of the former Inspector-General, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, who stepped down citing personal family considerations.

The President commended Mr. Egbetokun for his decades of distinguished service, highlighting his professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to improving Nigeria’s internal security framework.

Mr. Egbetokun, who assumed office in June 2023, was serving a four-year term set to end in June 2027, in line with the amended Police Act.
