Nigeria Integrates Space Technology to Strengthens Counterterrorism

Nigeria is taking a significant step in modernising its security operations by integrating space-based technologies, including satellite surveillance, radar imaging, and advanced signal analytics, into counterterrorism and border security efforts.

The Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, announced the initiative during a meeting at Ship House with a delegation from the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), led by Director General Matthew O. Adepoju.

General Musa highlighted that intelligence-led operations are essential to disrupting terrorism, armed banditry, and transnational criminal networks. He said satellite-enabled monitoring and radar systems would enhance situational awareness, track illicit movements, and improve the precision of deployed forces.

“This collaboration ensures that our forces are equipped with real-time intelligence and enhanced operational capabilities to secure our borders and protect lives,” he said.

The development marks a closer partnership between NASRDA and the Defence Space Administration, aimed at streamlining the use of Nigeria’s space assets for military purposes while reducing duplication and harmonising deployment strategies.

Director General Adepoju disclosed that presidential approval has been granted to begin procurement of additional satellites, including radar-capable platforms, which will improve monitoring across Nigeria’s 4,000-kilometre land borders, particularly in regions affected by insurgency and transnational trafficking.

He emphasised that these systems would provide persistent, all-weather surveillance, including night-time and cloud-penetrating intelligence capabilities that were previously unavailable to security forces.

The collaboration reflects a global trend where nations increasingly deploy space technologies for early warning, operational coordination, and national security.
