Namibia’s central bank has announced that its Governor, Johannes !Gawaxab, will step down at the end of 2025, marking the completion of his five-year term since June 2020.

During his tenure, !Gawaxab guided the Bank of Namibia through the global economic turbulence triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, helping to stabilise the country’s financial system.

The central bank highlighted several of his key achievements, including the successful redemption of a US$750 million Eurobond in October 2025 and the growth of Namibia’s sovereign wealth fund, the Welwitschia Fund.

!Gawaxab was also credited with maintaining low inflation, which averaged 3.6 percent in the first eight months of 2025, down from 4.6 percent during the same period in the previous year.

The Bank of Namibia has not disclosed what !Gawaxab plans to do after stepping down.
