Kano, the ancient city renowned for its rich history and commerce, soared in celebration on Thursday as it marked 100 years of aviation, commemorating a century since the first aircraft landed in the city in 1925.

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, led the nation in the centenary celebration held at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport.

Represented by the Regional Manager, Musa Okikiri, Kuku described the event as a historic milestone in Nigeria’s aviation journey and a symbol of resilience, innovation, and national progress.

She recalled that on 1 November 1925, Kano’s skies witnessed the arrival of the first aircraft—an event that opened a new chapter in transportation, trade, and connectivity, shaping the city’s destiny for generations to come.

“Kano’s long-standing history as a hub of commerce and culture made it the ideal location for aviation’s early development in Nigeria. That first landing was not just a flight, but the dawn of modernity and a testament to human ingenuity,” she said.

Also speaking, the Director of Studies, Nigerian Aviation, and programme director of the celebration, Tayo Ajuri, highlighted the enduring significance of the 1925 landing. He noted that the event marked the beginning of Kano’s pivotal role in Nigeria’s aviation success, which has seen remarkable achievements over the past century.

Ajuri described the anniversary as a celebration of success, connectivity, and modernisation, reaffirming Kano’s position as a major aviation hub and a vital commercial centre attracting international airlines and investors.

The centenary celebration featured goodwill messages, exhibitions, and cultural displays, underscoring Kano’s enduring role as a gateway between Nigeria and the world.
