A former Minister of Foreign Affairs and one-time Minister of State for Health, Idi Hong, has officially defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing his former party as a “sinking ship.”
Hong announced his decision in his hometown of Hong, Local Government Area, Adamawa State, where he was greeted by a large gathering of supporters and political associates.
He explained that the move followed extensive consultations with his political network and loyalists across all 21 Local Government Areas of the state.
“I cannot allow myself and my followers to be dragged down by a party that is clearly losing direction,” Hong said. He added that remaining in the PDP no longer served the best interests of his supporters or their collective political goals.
The former minister expressed confidence that the APC offers a stronger platform to pursue his development agenda for Adamawa State and Nigeria at large. He noted that his years of public service experience, combined with new ideas, would strengthen the ruling party and contribute effectively to governance.
Hong instructed members of his political network to resign from the PDP and formally align with the APC, signalling a coordinated grassroots shift ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Welcoming him, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Idris Shuaibu, represented by Hassan Babuto, assured Hong of equal rights and opportunities within the party.

“In APC, we do not discriminate. By virtue of your registration, you are qualified to contest any position you wish,” Babuto said.
Confirming the development, Aliyu Ahmed, APC Chairman in Hong Local Government Area, pledged full support for Hong in any role he chooses, emphasising the party’s commitment to inclusive participation and internal democracy.
Babuto also confirmed that Hong has officially registered with the APC in Shangui Ward, Hong Local Government Area.
