The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has expressed deep concern over the recent political and social developments in Venezuela.
In a statement, the ECOWAS Commission acknowledged that states have the right to combat international crimes, including terrorism and drug trafficking. However, it reminded the global community of their “obligation to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of each other,” as outlined in international law.
The Commission further stated: “ECOWAS fully aligns itself with the statement of the African Union that calls for restraint and inclusive dialogue among the people of Venezuela.”
ECOWAS also reaffirmed its “solidarity with the people of Venezuela and urges all States to respect the independence and territorial integrity of Venezuela,” emphasising its support for an inclusive process through which Venezuelans can determine the future of their country.
