At least three people were killed and several others injured after a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday, authorities said, causing damage to buildings in many areas, including the densely populated capital, Dhaka.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake’s epicentre was in the city of Narsingdi, approximately 40 km (25 miles) east of Dhaka.
Tremors were also felt in eastern Indian states bordering Bangladesh, but there were no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties in India, officials said.
Local police and emergency services were deployed to affected areas to assess the damage and provide assistance to residents.
The earthquake comes as the region continues to grapple with dense urban populations and infrastructure that is vulnerable to seismic activity. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines in the aftermath of the quake.
